Incredibly good, the new Port Adelaide. I just moved over from Melbourne. You know there are dolphins in the Port River? I didn't. The first thing that got me, though, was the coffee. Lipson Street Cafe (the sign still says tearooms) is world-class. There are a dozen other places doing good coffee ... best of all the funky Lipson. Then there's the beer. Port Dock Brewery Hotel makes and pours half-a-dozen of the best brews, ever. There are seven pubs worth visiting. And the food - Spice'n'Ice is packed most nights with people from all over ... unlike old-worldy Riverside Chinese Restaurant, where you can get a table most nights. The Riverside is still a local secret - amazing food in a 160-year-old building that the chef and his wife restored to its original glory with their own hands. It's worth a visit just for the fireplace. You know they spent 18 months bucketing dirt out of the cellars, where you can now sit and sip South Australian wines? And the gorgeous British Hotel, on the riverbank, is about to re-open as a five-star restaurant. Nice.

Everything is packed together in an enclave of sandstone and bluestone, and it's just across the bridge from the brilliant Newport Quays. This place is on the Semaphore side of the river ... overlooking the best beach in Adelaide. The jetties, the sand-dunes, the azure water, the blue swimmer crabs being pulled in everywhere you look, the fish and hand-cut chips ... unbelievable. Don't believe me, though - take a look.
